Ten Finnish municipalities, Ii, Jyväskylä, Kuopio, Lahti, Lappeenranta, Porvoo, Riihimäki, Rovaniemi, Turku and Vantaa, have committed themselves to ambitious and concrete efforts to promote the circular economy.

As the first municipal network, they intend to achieve the goals of the National Waste Plan by recycling at least 55% of municipal waste, using at least 70% of construction and demolition waste for material recovery and reducing the overall waste volume to what it was in 2000 by the year 2020.

The municipalities promote the circular economy in their regions through the methods they select. They establish new business operations, activate residents in the area and forge new cooperation arrangements with a variety of operators.

The Finnish Environment Institute and Motiva selected the pioneers from among some 20 applicants. The choice was influenced by the commitments that the municipalities made in the application phase and the measures that the municipalities have taken so far to promote the circular economy.
