Both national and international goals have been set to promote circular economy. Municipalities, regions and businesses have also set their own goals.
European Commission’s circular economy package
The circular economy package published by the European Commission sets new goals for recycling and the amount of waste ending up in landfills in the EU. The goal is to recycle at least 55% of all municipal waste by 2025. The goal would then rise to 60% by 2030 and 65% by 2035. The EU-wide recycling goal of packaging waste, in turn, is 65% by 2025 and 60% by 2030. There are separate goals for specific materials. Circular economy goals of the Finnish Government
The Finnish Government aims to build Finland into a socially, economically and ecologically sustainable society. A goal to develop Finland’s role as a pioneer in circular economy is included in the government programme. Promoting circular economy helps control the overconsumption of natural resources and climate change, protect biodiversity, create new types of jobs and boost the competitive strength of the economy. Finland’s road map towards circular economy
“The critical move - Finland's road map to a circular economy 2.0”, published by the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, summarises the implementation of circular economy in Finland as the realisation of four strategic cross-sectoral goals. These goals are: Renewal of the foundations of competitiveness and vitality, transfer to low-carbon energy, natural resources regarded as scarcities and everyday decisions working as a driving force for change. National waste plan
The National Waste Plan of Finland for 2023 proposes the objective state of waste management and the prevention of waste in 2030, detailed goals for 2023 and the measures required to fulfil these goals. Learn more about the National Waste Plan of Finland.
Plastics Roadmap for Finland
In the autumn of 2018, the Finnish Ministry of the Environment prepared a Plastics Roadmap with the theme Reduce and Refuse, Recycle and Replace with the help of an extensive cooperation network and Finnish citizens. The national roadmap includes means to reduce the negative impacts of plastic, avoid unnecessary consumption, boost the recycling of plastic and find better solutions. Goals of municipalities, regions and businesses
Many municipalities have set goals and taken action to improve their material efficiency and cut back on waste. The municipalities in the FISU (Finnish Sustainable Communities) network are striving toward carbon neutrality, zero waste and globally sustainable consumption by 2050 and a road map has been prepared to meet these goals.
